Personal: Adventures in Exisitence

Song For The Road
David Ford

First of all...David Ford is amazing, I received an email recently suggesting his music to me because I mentioned Ingrid Michaelson here on my blog. While there's not a lot of resemblance between the two artists as far as I can see, I was still absolutely blown away. His voice strikes a perfect balance between raspy and longing/melodic. Every song is full of emotion, but the one that caught my particular attention was "Song For The Road" which I've been playing often for the past few days. The lyrics are meaningful and hopeful, and the song progresses from feeling lonely and desolate to triumphant and full. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed and would definitely suggest his music!

Moving on, if you're sitting here reading this and have seen "The Dark Knight" I'd suggest you just leave now. I hate you. You aren't welcome here. :P No, I still have not seen it despite having hyped and looked forward to it for months...I have yet to make it to the theater to see it. (I'm still holding out for being able to make it over to the IMAX showing, might just have to fold and see it at our local theater.) I haven't seen Wall•e either, although I really would like to see it in theaters Dark Knight obviously takes priority.

Speaking of movies, in a bout of insomnia about a week ago I randomly chose a movie I hadn't heard of and rented it from iTunes. The movie I selected–The Holiday–was a romatic comedy of sorts - which generally isn't my genre of choice. (Due to the fact that they all seem to be sliced off the same cookie dough roll.) I was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty delightful movie, not one I'd watch over and over...but it was charming for a one-time watch type of thing. Jack Black really "made" the movie for me as the quirky musical score composer, and I think I related on some level to the heartbroken "Iris" (Kate Winslet) or at least the "me" of a few months ago did. A few of her quotes on moving on with your life really hit home with me and while not life changing, did make for an enjoyable insomnia distraction.

I've actually been happily surprised by the last several things I've seen Jack Black in, I used to be skeptical when seeing his name associated with a movie but the last few things I've seen him in have really impressed me. (King Kong, Nacho Libre, The Holiday, Be Kind Rewind, School of Rock.)

Things have been incredibly chaotic around here the past few days with Mom and Dad both working out of the house for the week and me working evenings, but I've got lots of exciting things to look forward to in the near future. After tomorrow things should significantly slow around here. I'm going on a trip to Arkansas in September to attend "Bop on the Lake" and see some old friends which should be fun. (I believe a day trip to Memphis has also been suggested.)

I'm hoping to have my new camera equipment by then, because I'd planned to do some shoots while I was in AR. I've taken on some extra hours at work to try and ensure that I have my new camera/lenses and can afford my airfare. I am just a little short unless I can grab some extra hours the week before I leave or maybe get a graphic design commission. I'll have to do some craigslist surfing later for short term jobs.

That's about all that's brewing on the work front, at least until after I get my camera, then I've got plans to try and get some local clientele for portrait photoshoots.

That aside, just gearing up to start classes in the fall...this year is going to be rough, school-wise, a lot of work but I definitely feel more prepared than a few months ago and am working on scheduling and getting finished up with a few books that I'd planned to finish over the summer. I'm looking forward to this year, despite it's daunting workload and random "things I need to do." I'm sure I'll post more on that in a few weeks. (Hopefully I'll be able to maintain working hard, and get caught up in things so I don't start panicing around that time.)

But yeah, overall life is great right now. I'd write more - but I've gotta run for now. I have a few more lovely first-job anecdotes and topics to talk about later. Plus, my August featured movie/CD of the month to put up.

For now, have a wonderful Tuesday!
